Canary Island Date Palm, Phoenix canariensis

Go to - Landscape Trees
Landscape Shrubs

Family - Arecaceae

The Canary Island Date Palm, sometimes called the Pineapple Palm is very slow growing, eventually reaching a height of 40-60 feet.

Topped with a 25 foot wide crown of green fronds that can be up to 15 feet long gracefully arching gracefully outward from a thick trunk, this palm is outstanding as a specimen/focal point for large scale landscapes or street/median plantings.

Mature Canary Island Palms are harvested from existing plantings and transplanted to new sites, sometimes they don't transplant well so make sure you get a written guarantee when you buy one!

U.S.D.A. Zones - 8a - 11, Full sun.

Soil - Not picky about soil type as long as its well drained (don't over-water!), very good drought tolerance, medium salt air tolerance.

Base of fronds have sharp, 2-3 inch long spines, so use care when pruning! Although these are beautiful palms they are susceptible to pests and diseases and so do require some care and a watchful eye.
